Abstract: ABSTRACT RELATIONS OF FOLIC ACID AND HOMOCYSTEINE PLASMA LEVELS IN PREECLAMPSIA AND NORMAL PREGNANCY Inke Malahayati One of the causes of maternal mortality is preeclampsia. Endhotelial dysfunction is believed to be the cause of the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. Homocysteine roles in vascular damage in preeclampsia is homocysteine. Folic acid deficiency is associated with increased homocysteine level. The aim of this research was to determine the relationship of the level of folic acid and homocysteine levels in preeclampsia and normal pregnancy. This study design was analytic cross-sectional, observation on 46 pregnant women with preeclampsia and normal pregnancy by the aged 20-35 years old in M. Djamil Hospital, Rasidin Hospital and Reksodiwiryo Padang Hospital, from March to Mei 2015. Samples were selected based on consecutive sampling. The level of folic acid and homocysteine were conducted in the Laboratory of Biomedical Faculty of Medicine Andalas University by ELISA method. Normality test data with One-sample Kolmogorov Smirnov test, unpaired T- test for mean difference of mean and Pearson correlation test to assess the relationship of folic acid and homocysteine using SPSS 16.0 version. The mean level of folic acid in preeclampsia and normal pregnancy were 39.53+9.40 ng/mL and 47.04+13.20 ng/mL (p<0,05). The mean level of homocysteine in preeclampsia and normal pregnancy were 18.52+0,41 µmol/L dan 17.80+0.73 µmol/L (p<0,05). There was an insignificant and very weak negative correlation between the level of folic acid and homocycteine in preeclampsia (r=-0,034; p>0,05). There was an insignificant and weak negative correlation between folic acid and homocycteine level in normal pregnancy (r=-0,222; p>0,05). In conclution, folic acid level in preeclampsia was lower than in normal pregnancy. Homocysteine level in preeclampsia was higher than in normal pregnancy. Low folic acid level tend to increase the level of homocysteine in preeclampsia. High folic acid level tend to decrease homocysteine level in normal pregnancy
